Bud has been an important part of the Nellie Gail tennis staff for over 24 years. He helped turn the junior program around and has been incredibly popular with both our adult and junior players.
He comes to us originally from Boston, Massachusetts. Having started tennis at the relatively late age of 25, Bud made up for lost time. He won the New Hampshire State doubles title in 1977 and moved to California in 1978. In 1978, Bud was named the Head Tennis Professional at the Westlake Village Tennis Club, where he stayed until 1992. While there Bud coached Westlake High School to 2 first place league finishes and then moved on to Moorpark Junior College where he coached for 5 years and received coach of the year honors once. As a player Bud has won numerous events including a couple of USPTA (tennis professionals) doubles and mixed doubles championships.
Bud resides in Laguna Woods. He received his BS from Lowell Tech in Massachusetts, and his MBA from Rivers College in New Hampshire.
Kate Mortensen has been involved with tennis most of her life, beginning with juniors in Southern California where she was nationally ranked and heavily recruited for collegiate tennis. Kate played locally in high school at Dana Hills, then spent four years playing at Division I Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, both in singles and doubles. She earned a full tennis scholarship and studied psychology.
Kate has been teaching tennis in many facets to all ages over the past 11 years, including assisting with the extremely successful Dana Hills School tennis teams. Along with six years coaching of highly competitive California Training Center alongside Hank Llyod.
You may find her teaching PAC sun ladies how to close the net, small kids learning the basics of tennis or seniors keeping the love of tennis alive.
When Kate isn’t on the court you can find her at home with her husband Michael and twins, Madison and Grant
Tennis has taught me to take chances, to take life as it comes. To hit every ball that comes to me, no matter how hard it looks, to give it my best shot.
Don is a very experienced teaching professional who originally comes to Nellie Gail from the Chicago area. He has logged over 40 years of on court instruction teaching beginner level students to top nationally ranked students. His many students have enjoyed success at various levels including working with over 70 nationally ranked juniors , some #1 ranked players and players who have had success on the professional tour. Even with this kind of success Don’s favorite on court activity is the first timer or beginner student. Whether a child or an adult Don loves to see the progress of his students and truly relishes in showing them the joys of tennis.
